    FIELD PERFORMANCE

A surreal fairy tale about really wanting to see each other.

In a lost paradise, Djek and Djill try to figure out what their love really is without the defining eyes of the outside world. In an ongoing series of metamorphoses, they discover both the enchanting and monstrous sides of each other, but are left wondering if this real love cannot exist only in their imagination.

Djek and Djill retreat to the deep forest, away from the chaos of the big city. Here, in peace, they find out who they are for the other. What do they mean to each other apart from their origins, social status and expectations? Again and again they transform to meet each other as new characters each time. This visual, musically driven performance, inspired by Frankenstein and Disney classics, consists of epically orchestrated soundscapes, original pop melodies, expressive dance and countless costume changes. Why such a strange love is a surreal fairy tale that starts from the belief that if you really want to be able to see each other, you have to look at each other’s dreams.

“Why such a strange love is a strange, fast-paced musical full of original music, in which two lovers against the backdrop of a steel-colored forest cottage constantly take on new roles, inspired by stereotypical images from the media: the innocent Disney princess, the dangerous stranger, the jazzy diva, et cetera.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ NRC at Oerol.

Over de makers
Jelle Haen studied voice preliminary training at the Conservatory of Music. Jessica Matheson studied dance at the Transit Dance program in Melbourne, where she is from. Jelle and Jessica met while studying at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO) in Amsterdam, where they graduated in 2021.

Orkater/De Nieuwkomers
Within the talent development program Orkater/De Nieuwkomers, young musicians and theater makers turn their ideas into music theater productions. Based on an open call, makers are selected to present their plans to Orkater and programmers and peers who have committed themselves to the program as alliance partners. Why such a strange love is the 27th production within Orkater/De Nieuwkomers.

JONGE HARTEN VIEWING GUIDE

Jonge Harten offers a diverse program. But where do you start choosing? To clarify things somewhat, we have three main storylines that we are focusing on this year. You can see these lines throughout our program. So that you can easily choose which line suits you best and what you feel like doing at the moment. What are you going for?

DEEPENING

FIELD

FIELD was created to strengthen the bond with young talent and to give both the artists and the festival the opportunity to support people in the longer term and to make their “dreams” come true. We focus in particular on students who we feel (after conversations and performances) connect themselves as creators with the world beyond. In a conscious, critical and idiosyncratic way.

WORKSHOP
